Peabody Institute Library

Description

The Peabody Institute Library, the city of Peabody’s public library, was constructed in 1854 and received major additions in 1869 and 1971. The Romanesque Revival building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is protected by a preservation restriction from the Massachusetts Historical Commission. Our firm was involved in the installation of new energy-saving HVAC systems designed by RDK Engineers.  As the historic preservation architect on the RDK team, we identified the building’s historic character-defining features and were commissioned to redesign the reading room while accommodating up-to-date climate control systems and indirect lighting in coffers to better harmonize with the 19th century structure. An MAAB compliance study was performed and modifications were implemented. As part of the interface between the new HVAC systems and the building envelope, the 1970s roof was replaced and a historical commission-approved roof dormer was designed.
